When did you start this?
December 7th, 2009 is the day we got the website up and started getting the word out. See the first post here.
How long did it take you to collect 400,000 cans?
6 months, 15 days. That’s one can about every 40 seconds for the entire time the project was going on.
What are you doing now that you’ve met your goal?
We’ll continue collecting cans. 40% of the proceeds will go towards our honeymoon fund, the other 60% will go to Doctors without Borders and the Rim Country Land Institute. We’ll also be working on putting together (after the wedding!) a complete guide on doing this for your own project.
When did you get engaged?
October 3rd, 2009 – at Andrea’s sister’s wedding. Peter caught the garter at the reception, and Andrea dropped to one knee and proposed with an opal earring.
What kind of wedding are you planning?
A community-centered, homemade celebration of family and friends. With only $3,800 – $4,000 for a budget (less than 20% of the budget of a $25,000 “average wedding”), we will be keeping it fairly conservative. It will be a handfasting officiated by the friend that brought us together. Oh, and the bouquet will be tossed with a trebuchet
Has this ever been done before?
Not really to the extent we are attempting. There have been two other couples that have used aluminum to fund some portion of their wedding – see more here.
What is the environmental impact of this project?
By recycling 5 tons of cans, we will be saving about 50 tons of carbon emissions – enough to offset 5 years of our emissions plus extra for the impact of the wedding itself. See more numbers and stats here.
How can I help?
Recycle! In Spokane, we’ll pick up your recyclables, or drop them off at the Instant Sign Factory downtown. Outside Spokane, find a local recycling center and recycle there. Kick a few dollars of the proceeds our direction, and let us know how many cans you recycled.
